The wealth of original series, documentaries, and feature films you can find here can be overwhelming, so we thought of listing some of the best you should start with if you haven’t yet. This list includes new shows and long-running favorites you probably didn’t know are now on Netflix.

1. Lost in Space (new)

If you’re into space flicks with a bit of family drama, you’ll enjoy this dramatic and modern reimagining of the classic 1960s science fiction series. 

Plot: Set 30 years in the future, colonization in space is now a reality, and the Robinson family is among those tested and selected to make a new life for themselves in a better world. But when the new colonists find themselves abruptly torn off course en route to their new home and crash-landing on an alien planet, they must forge new alliances and work together to fight against all odds—to survive and escape a dangerous environment lightyears from their original destination.

2. Santa Clarita (2 seasons)

If you enjoy comedy, a bit of family drama, and, yes, zombie flicks, you’ll love this series! Don’t worry, scaredy-cats, it’s not scary at all—Drew Barrymore is likely the most adorable, human-eating undead.

Plot: Husband and wife realtors Joel (Timothy Olyphant) and Sheila (Drew Barrymore) lead vaguely discontented lives in the L.A. suburb of Santa Clarita, until Sheila goes through a dramatic change sending both their lives down a road of death and destruction...but somehow, they manage to be endearing about it, while navigating the complex dynamics of marriage and raising a teenage daughter.

3. Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (2 seasons)

If you’re a fan of storybook fantasy, family drama, and anything Neil Patrick Harris does, this show based on the international best-selling children’s novels by Daniel Handler is for you—especially if you read all 13 imaginative books! 

Plot: The series is about three wealthy Baudelaire children who are sent to their closest relative, the greedy and manipulative Count Olaf (Neil Patrick Harris), after the sudden deaths of their parents. As the extraordinary Baudelaire orphans continue on their journey for a proper guardian, they face trials, tribulations, and encounter a variety of eccentric characters—several of which are also played by Harris—in their fateful quest to unlock long-held family secrets. The kids never fall for the evil Count Olaf’s trickery, but the adults always do. Each episode spans half a novel, allowing viewers to savor every detail of each unfortunate event while still moving at a brisk, cinematic pace.

4. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (4 seasons) 

If you love watching anything set in New York City and you happen to be a fan of Tina Fey’s work, you can’t miss this series she produced—it’s a hoot!

Plot: The series revolves around a woman rescued from a doomsday cult and lands in New York City, where she must navigate a world she didn’t think even existed anymore.

5. Suits (6 seasons in Netflix so far)

If you love courtroom and law firm drama, stylish corporate outfits, and fast-talking, gorgeous lawyers—who strut around a pretend New York (the series is actually shot in Toronto, Canada)—you won’t be able to stop watching this. It’s hilarious and nail-biting. Bonus for women: Gabriel Macht and Patrick J. Adams are not only good looking, their banter as the infamous Harvey Specter and Mike Ross will keep making you swoon!

Plot: The show revolves around brilliant college dropout Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) who accidentally ends up getting hired as a law associate of Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht), who’s deemed the best closer in New York City, despite never having attended law school nor the license to practice law. Together, they win cases for the firm while trying to avoid revealing their big secret: that Mike is a fraud.

6. Mad Men (7 seasons)

If you are in the world of advertising or are an outsider fascinated by it, you’ll enjoy all the drama depicted in this award-winning series. Oh, and you’ll love the clothes! 

Plot: This series depicts an agency in 1960s New York City—an era when the cutthroat business still had a glamorous lure.

7. Sherlock (4 seasons) 

If you’re a fan of Sherlock Holmes, Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, a good crime mystery, or all of the above, this BBC series is for you. You’ll likely finish all four seasons this weekend, since each one has only three feature-length episodes (plus one special, set in the Victorian period like the original Holmes stories).

Plot: Benedict Cumberbatch plays Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman plays his sidekick Dr. John Watson in this contemporary retelling of the classic detective stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but this time set in modern-day London.
